The world-famous Union Chain Bridge connecting England and Scotland has re-opened after its painstaking restoration restored it to its original glory, with a very modern addition.
Restoration of the 202-year-old structure, the oldest vehicle suspension bridge in the world took 30 months to restore. Every single piece has been removed, checked and restored or replaced before being carefully reassembled.
The restoration work has combined the traditional workmanship used when the bridge was first built with state of the art technical engineering and techniques used in Alpine ski resorts. A key requirement of the National Lottery Heritage Fund was to involve the community and provide interpretation about the bridge and engineer. An Info Point Solar was incorporated into a custom built frame that houses the equipment and provides mounting for the solar panel.
